John Munn papers, 1824-1873.

Primarily journals kept by John Munn relating his thoughts and activities (40 vol., 1824-1873); plus a few other items, including a Connecticut 1st Infantry commission (1828 Apr. 23) and a receipt for purchase of a slave named Nelson (1836 Sept. 17). The journal entries mainly detail travel and places. Topics include Munn's business activities as a store clerk in Hartford (Conn.) until 1828, store owner and banker in Canton (Miss.) ca. 1834-1849, and investor in Chicago (Ill.) real estate and railroads. They also cover Munn's activities as a resident of Utica (N.Y.) ca. 1849-1865 and his illnesses and family matters. Also mentioned are business and political conditions: slavery, presidents, the Mexican War, the Civil War, public events, lectures, and holiday celebrations. His journals also document travel by stagecoach, train, river, lake, canal, and ocean vessels; and places where Munn resided briefly or visited on his frequent trips, including Chicago, New York City, New Orleans, London, Paris, and Montreal. Munn married Mary Jane Buchanan Meek in 1838, and they had two children while residing in Canton, Mississippi (Charles and Mary) and two more children after moving, in 1849, to Utica, N.Y., George (1851-1907) and Sarah.
